All motor vehicles used on Tanzania’s public roads must carry at minimum third-party insurance under the Road Traffic Act (Cap. 168). Despite this, thousands of drivers either hold expired certificates or forged documents, exposing themselves and others to serious financial and legal risk. Here is what genuine, legally-compliant motor insurance looks like and what it actually costs.
Two Types of Motor Cover
Third-Party Only (TPO)
This is the legal minimum required by Tanzanian law. It covers:
- Bodily injury or death caused to other road users
- Damage to third-party property (up to the policy limit)
It does not cover your own vehicle damage, your own medical bills, theft, fire, or flood damage to your car.
Comprehensive Cover
Comprehensive insurance includes everything in a TPO policy, plus:
- Accidental damage to your own vehicle
- Theft and attempted theft
- Fire damage
- Windscreen replacement (included with most policies)
- Passenger personal accident benefits (on some policies)
What Does Motor Insurance Cost in Tanzania?
Premiums vary by insurer, vehicle age, engine capacity, declared use, and claims history. As a general guide for a private saloon car:
- Third-party only: TZS 100,000 – 350,000 per year
- Comprehensive: approximately 2.5%–4% of the vehicle’s current market value per year
For example, a Toyota Vitz valued at TZS 12 million would typically cost TZS 300,000–480,000 per year for comprehensive cover. A Land Cruiser valued at TZS 80 million could cost TZS 2,000,000–3,200,000 per year. An independent broker like NENO compares rates across all TIRA-licensed insurers so you are not overpaying.
Five Things to Check Before You Sign
- Is the insurer TIRA-licensed? Verify at tira.go.tz before accepting any certificate. Unlicensed underwriters cannot legally pay claims.
- What is the excess (deductible)? The amount you pay out of pocket on any claim. A higher excess lowers your premium but increases your exposure when you claim.
- Does the policy cover EAC countries? If you regularly drive to Kenya or Uganda, confirm your policy has an East African Community extension (most do not include this by default).
- Is your use declared correctly? Using a private vehicle for commercial purposes (taxi driving, delivery, courier) on a private policy voids your claim entirely.
- What is the basis of settlement? Agreed value pays a fixed amount if your car is written off. Market value pays what the car was worth at the time of loss. These produce very different payouts for older vehicles.
What To Do Immediately After an Accident
The steps you take in the first hour after an accident determine whether your claim succeeds or fails.
- Ensure safety first: move vehicles off the road if possible. Call 112 for emergencies.
- Do not admit liability at the scene, even if you believe you were at fault. Let the insurers and assessors make that determination.
- Obtain a police report (OB number or full P3 form). Without this, most Tanzanian insurers will not process a motor claim.
- Photograph everything: both vehicles from multiple angles, skid marks, road signs, and the overall scene. Timestamp and geolocation data from your phone is powerful evidence.
- Exchange information: names, ID numbers, vehicle registration, and insurer details from all parties involved.
- Notify your broker or insurer within 24–72 hours. Check your exact policy deadline, as late notification can give the insurer grounds to deny the claim.
Why Motor Claims Get Rejected in Tanzania
- No police report (OB number) was filed
- Policy had lapsed because the renewal premium was not paid
- Vehicle was used commercially on a private policy
- The driver did not hold a valid licence at the time of the accident
- Damage was inconsistent with the reported incident (insurers employ assessors who investigate)
- The claim was notified too late, outside the policy’s prescribed timeframe
Working through a TIRA-licensed broker like NENO means you have an advocate, not just when things go wrong, but from the moment your policy is placed. We review the policy wording for exclusions that could affect you, track your renewal dates to prevent lapses, and represent you to the insurer if a claim is disputed.
